BENSON, AZ -- Authorities were looking into how intruders were able to break into Kartchner Caverns State Park and walk freely in a cave.
Cochise County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carol Capas says that officials were hoping to turn up investigative leads Tuesday in a cave left damaged by more than one trespasser.
Capas says they have recovered several items of evidence from the scene.
Officials say the suspects forced a door open through the lower portal of the cavern sometime Sunday night.
Capas says they left the pedestrian walkway inside the areas known as the Tarantula Room and the Big Room, harming an area of straw stalactites.
Tours at the park have continued as scheduled. Park officials are working to determine the ecological damage.
