YUMA, AZ -- A man is in jail after he was found with marijuana and a stolen pistol at a border checkpoint near Dateland on Sunday.
Shaun Kuzia, spokesperson with the Yuma Sector Border Patrol, said the man's vehicle was stopped at an immigration checkpoint on Interstate 8 eastbound around 3 p.m.
A Border Patrol canine team reportedly located a small amount of marijuana and a handgun inside the car.
Kuzia said agents ran a records checks on the firearm and discovered that the pistol was reported stolen and had recently been used in an armed robbery in Phoenix.
The weapon and marijuana were turned over to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office along with the driver. The passenger was cited for possession of marijuana and released.
"We are grateful for the cooperation that we get from the U.S. Border Patrol at the checkpoint," said YCSO Captain Bratcher. "The apprehension of this subject and stolen weapon could prove essential in solving a robbery case in another jurisdiction."
