Officers kill bear lingering in northern Arizona community

Reported by: Associated Press
Last Update: 6/16/2009 8:04 am
For four days, members of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office and state Game and Fish tracked a bear hanging around the northern Arizona community of Cornville, near Sedona.

A resident reported seeing the bear Saturday. Sunday, the bear was seen drinking out of hoses in various backyards.

Game and Fish officers killed the bear Monday when it became bold and more of a nuisance than a curiosity.

Before it was put down, agents said the bear killed a goat and dragged it away. When it was confronted, it did not leave.

Game and Fish spokesman Zen Mocarski says a 75-pound bear "is still a very powerful animal."

State officials advise against feeding bears or any wild animals and suggest securing garbage can lids and screening off berry-bearing plants.
