NOGALES, AZ -- U.S. Border Patrol agents say they have uncovered an intricate smuggling tunnel in Nogales.
Officials say the tunnel is the first to have been discovered in the past four months.
Border Patrol spokesman Mario Escalante said the 30-foot-long tunnel was found about 150 yards from the DeConcini Port of Entry.
The tunnel is reportedly supported with shoring and 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall on the Mexican side of the border. Officials said as the tunnel passes under the border fence into the United States, shoring stops and the opening is reduced to 18 inches wide by 18 inches tall.
The tunnel was concealed on the U.S. side of the border with plywood and weeds.
Border patrol officials say a more elaborate tunnel was discovered in June. It was approximately 48 feet long on the U.S. side and ran another 35 feet under Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
Escalante said there's no evidence as to who was using the tunnel.
