MARICOPA, AZ – Maricopa firefighters are hoping to look pretty in pink.
That’s because starting Thursday and running throughout the month of October, firefighters in Maricopa are exchanging their navy blue shirts for pink ones to honor breast cancer awareness.
Acting fire chief Wade Brannon says, “It seems as though everyone knows someone who has suffered through this cancer, and this is one small way the [fire] department put forth the message to have hope and honor those who are courageous in their fight against cancer.”
Maricopa firefighters are hoping their drastic change in attire will help remind women that cancer can be spotted early and the risks of dying can be reduced with regular screening tests.
“Residents can be proud that the firefighters are showing an image of hope and courage to those that are battling for their life,” says Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith. “They are a walking reminder of the need to increase awareness in the prevention of breast cancer.”
