MOBILE, AZ – A fire destroyed a man's collection of vintage aircraft and motorcycles Monday in the outskirts of Mobile, about 14 miles west of Maricopa.
At about 3:30 p.m., Maricopa firefighters responded to the fire at a hangar located on a private airstrip near 99th Avenue and Lower Bucket Road.
The fire destroyed a total of eight restored, vintage aircraft and six classic motorcycles, according to Brad Pitassi with the Maricopa Fire Department.
Firefighters had a tough time fighting the flames and crews were called in from Ak-chin and Gila Bend, according to Pitassi.
"This was a tough fire," said Battalion Chief John Pantoja. "We had a limited water supply and the hangar was in a remote desert area surrounded by brush. Our crews got a good stop on the fire, preventing a wildfire."
No firefighters or civilians were hurt.
"Losing this collection of restored vintage aircraft and motorcycles is a devastating loss and our hearts go out to the owner," said Pantoja.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
