MARICOPA, AZ -- A 2-year-old girl who nearly drowned at a Maricopa home after being submerged in a dirty pool for two minutes is lucky to be alive, officials said Wednesday.
Brad Pitassi with the Maricopa Fire Department says the girl's grandmother found her floating in the pool, which did not have a barrier surrounding it.
The family told officials the girl had been submerged for about two minutes before she was pulled from the murky water.
Pitassi said around 6 p.m. units responded to a call at 22252 N. Vanderveen Way in Maricopa.
When crews arrived they found the girl alert and conscious.
She was transported to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where she is now in stable condition.
Pitassi said because the girl was found in a dirty pool there is potential for further long-term complications due to added bacteria in the water, and warns others of the danger.
He cautioned, "It is very important that people with a pool, properly maintain it and keeps it clear. A clear pool also helps to see someone if they fall in a pool and need help. In a dirty murk pool someone can drown without being seen."
