According to Casa Grande Councilman Dick Powell, the fire started in the town's historic train depot on Main Street at about 4 p.m. Friday.
He says the depot was built in 1939 and dedicated in 1940.
The depot was apparently on an endangered list and talks had been taking place about how to preserve the structure.
According to Casa Grande Fire Department spokesman David Bridger, building inspectors toured the building this morning and found that transients were living inside.
He said windows had been broken out, old mattresses were inside, there was trash, and a corner was being used as a bathroom.
Firefighters have not yet been able to make entry into the building so they don't know if there was anyone inside at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators are looking at whether it was started by a burning cigarette left on a mattress by one of the transients.
