CASA GRANDE, AZ -- The United States Secretary of Education will tour Arizona during his 50-state "Listening and Learning" tour to discuss the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
According to a press release from the education press secretary, John White, Secretary Arne Duncan will visit Ochoa Elementary School in Tucson and Palo Verde Elementary School in Case Grande on Monday, October 19. He will be in Tucson at 8:00 a.m. and is scheduled for the Casa Grande visit at 11:20 a.m.
Congressman Raul Grijalva is scheduled to attend the visit in Tucson, and Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick is scheduled to attend the visit in Casa Grande.
According to the release, Secretary Duncan will discuss education reform and what is necessary to continue improvement.
Enhancing graduation rates, teacher quality, English-language learning, and improving low-performing schools are all topics up for discussion.
"Last month Secretary Duncan met with 200 leaders of major education stakeholder groups and told them that the $24.8 billion in federal funds available annually to the nation's schools should support reforms that prepare students for success in college and careers," White wrote in a press release.
"He wants all stakeholders to have a voice in building a transformative education law that guarantees every child the education they want and need – a law that recognizes and reinforces the proper role of the federal government to support and drive reform," White continued.
