Valley mom reviews new Transformers movie

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” from a Moms Perspective

First of all I’m no film critic, but I do go to a lot of chick flicks, action adventures and kids movies.

Monday night I attended an advance screening of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," at the Harkins Tempe Marketplace Theater.

I attended the movie with my 8-year-old son and my mother.  Even after realizing what the movies rating was (Rated PG-13), I’ve seen the first movie at least four times with my son and just assumed with the same rating as the first Transformers movie, the sequel would be ok for my son to see.

The opening sequence of the movie in my opinion was one big loud mess. You couldn’t tell the good guys from the bad guys. And although there are a lot more transformers on the screen than before, doing some pretty cool stuff and great special effects, it was hard to figure out what they were fighting about and who was fighting.

At around 2 ½ hours total run time, the movie was very very long and it felt like it.  About 1/2 the way through it, my son leaned his head on my shoulder and only perked up during the action scenes.

It seemed the writer of the film is/was incredibly in love with the main characters' love interest (actress Megan Fox).  For most of the movie all she did was pout and wear revealing outfits and act in a sexually provocative manner.

My son turned away every time she came on the screen, embarrassed at what she was (showing off) or wearing and the sexual nature of her relationship with the main character (Shia LaBeouf). Overall, the sexual content was unnecessary.

The plot of the movie was very weak. In my opinion it was not well written and I didn’t “feel” for any of the characters and what did or didn’t happen to them.

My son’s favorite characters in the movie were two young Autobots - Skids and his brother Mudflap. The two “little ones” constantly fought, acted like kids and did a lot of “jive talkin”. Unfortunately they were the main ones that did the most cursing throughout the movie.

On about 20+ occasions, my mother and I turned to each other because the bad language was so rampant and so unnecessary.  Although he cracked up because the antics of the young Autobots were funny, my son responded on several occasions “Mommy I shouldn’t be hearing this” and he put his hands over his ears.

My rating: Overall I would give this film two mommy “fist bumps”.  We loved the special effects and of course Bumble Bee and Optimus Prime. Also, the main characters’ mother was very very funny.

I would not consider this a kid movie and I thought the original was much better than the sequel.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, language, some crude and sexual material and brief drug material. It opens tonight nationwide.

By the way, if you’re looking to see a great action adventure pick up “Taken” with Liam Neeson. I’ve watched the movie at least four times and I absolutely love it!

I am also looking forward to the movie “My Sisters Keeper,” with Cameron Diaz. The book is fantastic. The movie comes out on Friday, June 26th.  I’m told to bring lots and lots of tissues and I plan to!
