No pain, no gain? No problem.

This morning on Daybreak, we ran a story about Aqua-Liposuction… how the recovery time is less and how easy it is, yadda yadda yadda.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m a gal.  I know what it’s like to criticize, scrutinize, pick apart - you name it – I’ve done it.  We all want something we might not be able to have unless we sweat, starve, or splurge on surgery.  I’ve done the first two.  Let me tell you: sweating is sure easier than deprivation.  That lasted all of a day.  Then, the Keebler Elves showed up and we had a cookie party.  Thanks, guys.

I sent out a tweet about the lipo story shortly after it aired live and got an interesting response from one follower:

“Like many things lipo is a quick fix Jenn. Where's the feeling of accomplishment one gets from diet and exercise..?” –sjklepper

It’s true: to see muscles emerge or endurance develop due to hard work and time is quite a rush and a good motivator.  But, it’s that grueling work which scares or turns some people off.  In fact, it seems the phrase “no pain, no gain” doesn’t really apply to much of anything anymore.

I’m scared to death to go under the knife.  I pass out when I have blood drawn.  I mean, what if the end product ends up being worse than the “before?”

So, when there’s a story about lipo and it’s benefits, I wistfully look at the ease at which patients go from average to amazing.  Then I woefully wince as I lace up the running shoes one more time.  Lipo: it’s like the quick fix for fitness.

Which brings me to a broader point: it seems, these days especially, we’re a nation of quick fixes.

We want to talk with someone: we text.  We want to drop a few pounds or add a few to other regions of the body: we make an appointment.  We go into debt: we print more money.  Bingo.  Quick fix.  But, is the end product better than the before?  I guess that’s what the recovery time is for… to give us a chance to heal, then examine, criticize, scrutinize, pick apart… you name it… it’ll be done.
