Earlier this month, I made my first trip to
Maui.
My brother moved there three years ago -- and, I hadn't seen him since then.
So, my mom and I jetted off to Hawaii's *Valley Isle* for a family reunion/vacation.
We stayed on
Kaanapali Beach in
Lahaina.
Before you imagine sipping pina coladas on white sand -- let me say, this was not a *relaxing* vacation.
But, it sure was fun!
Since my brother is somewhat of a *local,* he acted like our own personal tour guide.
During the seven days we were on Maui, we explored most of the island -- from the up-country to the sea.
Some of the highlights of the trip -- and what I suggest you do, if you go:
Road to HanaIt's not about the destination -- it's what you'll see along the way: lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, black sand beaches and lava tunes -- for example.
Be advised, it is a very narrow and winding road -- with dozens of hair-pin turns.
And, be sure to return down the "Road to Hana" as well.
I took another road -- we're talking a one-lane, dirt road here -- to return to Lahaina.
Bad move: it took forever, as I had to drive about 20 miles an hour and slower -- navagating oceanside cliffs and waiting for cows roaming across the desolate road.
Iao Valley
This is one of my favorite places in Maui.
It is so lush and green -- with beautiful, pools of water to cool off in after a hike.
On the road there, be sure to stop at a coconut stand -- on the right side of the road.
The coconuts are so sweet -- both the water and the meat.
SnorkelingYou can't visit any island in Hawaii without snorkeling.
The coral reefs are home to a plethora of sealife.
If you want to see green sea turtles, take a boat tour to Olowalu Turtle Point.
I saw dozens during my trip.
Now, if you want to see schools of colorful fish -- head to
Honalua Bay.
While I was there, I came face to face with an octopus!
He was little, though.
Northwest Maui
I would call this drive "Road to Hana - Light" -- it's just as beautiful and winding, but, not quite as long.
One of the unusual sights you'll see along the way: fields of stacked rocks -- built by tourists.
I couldn't help but contribute to this outdoor work of art.
Speaking of art, check out the ...gallery above the town of Kahakaloa.
Enjoy the pictures!
