I'll never forget a call I got a few years ago... actually, nearly to the day. It was my mom. She was calling to let me know she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
My world stopped upon those words. Flashbacks of my mom taking me to ballet lessons, driving me to school, teaching me how to drive, driving me to get good grades, and giving love even when I was the nastiest child in the world, came to mind.
It was then, in a vast expanse of silence, that I realized I needed my mom. Here I was, an adult, living in a completely different state, and all I wanted to do was run to my mom for one of those hugs that erases fear, hurt or any other bump and bruise life doles out.
You know, moms are pretty amazing: selfless beings who can balance at least eight tasks and still manage to vacuum and complete abandoned science projects. And, that's from a kid's perspective.
From an adult's point of view, the worth of a mom is more than gold. She's a sounding board, a companion, a true compass when everything goes awry and all you need to do is get back on track.
Fortunately, my mom is still here. I hope you take time this Mother's Day to look that woman in the eye and tell her thank you. I know I will.
