Toyota Unwraps 2010 Prius, Touts 50 MPG

Last Update: 1/13 3:25 am
DETROIT (WXYZ) - Toyota has pulled the curtain off the next generation of Prius, unveiling the 2010 model at the Auto show.

The highly anticipated model gets an average of 50 miles to the gallon, a 4 mpg improvement over the current model. The Prius is already the Environmental Protection Agency's most fuel-efficient vehicle.

Toyota improved the Prius for the third generation by working on the design to make it more aerodynamic. Toyota will release the pricing on the new model in late spring.

It will also be offered with options like a moon roof with solar panels to power the cars ventilation system. The system uses an electrically powered air circulation fan that doesn't need the engine to work. It is designed to prevent the interior air temperature from rising while the vehicle is parked. It can be remotely operated, so drivers can adjust the temperature before they get inside. Toyota says the system is an industry first.

The new Prius is also getting a larger and more powerful 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The bigger engine is expected to improve fuel economy on the highway.

The Prius' debut comes just one day after Honda unveiled their 2010 Insight, which is expected to compete head-to-head with Prius when it hits US showrooms this April. Toyota also unveiled a new hybrid yesterday, showing off the HS250h, which will be sold under the company's Lexus banner.
