With shorter days on the way, we'll be relying more on our car's headlights to light the way and keep us safe while we're on the road.
But when was the last time you really looked at your headlights?
If your car is more than a few years old, you may want to check them.
It's possible you may not be getting all you can from your headlights. Sometimes the plastic covers over the lights will turn yellow, or become oxidized.
When that happens it's restricting the amount of light the bulbs are providing and that becomes a safety issue for the driver.
But don't go running to the auto repair shop just yet.
While some shops will charge up to $150 for what's called a "headlight renewal service," it's possible to do it yourself.
We went to an auto parts store and found a headlight renewal kit for $8.99.
Then we asked a driver, Marty Bates to try it out on his headlights, which appeared to be a little dull and yellowed.
After a series of steps which included applying a cream, and using 3 different sponges, he noticed a change when compared to the headlight that hadn't been cleaned.
"It is brighter now than the other one. You can tell the difference."
Bates also tried it on his tail lights which he said appeared to look dull as well.
"It brought all the colors in the tail lights out. You know after a couple of treatments of this, it might bring it out each time a little more," Bates said.
The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association estimates one quarter of cars on the road have some sort of reduced lighting problem.
