Many people are puzzled about how to arrange the furniture in their home or on how to change it for a fresh feeling.
Placing furniture in a room usually focuses on making the most of the space by leaving the center of the room empty. That means we place the large furniture items along the walls.
A room will look and feel larger and more comfortable if you create functional areas inside the open space.
Pulling the furniture away from the walls can be uncomfortable for you, but mainly because it is a new approach. Jewell Blair from
Jay B's Interior Design has 5 easy steps to transform your boxes into comfortable living spaces.
#1 Consider all of the ways you use a room. Few rooms have just one function. In the family room, you watch television, read, play games, and talk with family members. In the bedroom you sleep, get dressed, watch television, etc. Devise a floor plan that integrates all of the functions of the rooms.
#2 Is there a window with a fabulous view? Is the fireplace or television a natural focal point for the room?
The furniture plan should highlight the focal point, but also provide
secondary focal points with a purpose such as a reading area in the bedroom or game area in the family room.
Everything in the room does not have to face the main focal point.
#3 Each area will need lighting that supports the function for that space. In smaller spaces, overhead lighting may provide enough for the whole room.
In larger spaces, use floor and table lamps to provide task lighting and general or ambient light.
#4 Have you ever wanted to put down a glass but there was no where to put it? Side tables, cocktail tables, soda tables, night stands are a must.
The side table is one of the best tools for adding landing space, personality and style to a room. Mix and match sizes, shapes, and finishes in the same room for a designer touch.
#5 You will naturally feel more relaxed and comfortable every time you enter the room when it is filled with items that reflect your style and interests.
Have fun adding accessories, soft pillows, colorful throws and personal touches to each room. Use a variety of finishes, textures and surfaces to add warmth.
