In this economy it's all about making the most of what you already have.
You've probably heard about the "cash for clunkers" program, where you turn in your car for a rebate towards a new car.
Well now the government is planning a new rebate program to encourage consumers to swap out their “clunker” appliances in exchange for new high-efficiency models.
Whether or not you decide to participate in the program, the consumer ratings website,
AngiesList.com, is offering tips to make the most of current appliances:
Preventative maintenance
Preventative maintenance is your best bet for prolonging the life of your appliances.
Clean coilsBe sure to clean the condenser coils on your refrigerator annually and check door seals to ensure they are airtight.
Filters & hoseCheck air filters monthly and replace as needed. Replace washer fill hoses every five years.
LaundryAvoid overloading the washing machine. Have the exhaust duct on the clothes dryer inspected and cleaned once a year.
Clean the lint filter before each use.
Industry experts say washing machines tend to break down the most because they take the most beatings and contain many moving parts.
OvenDon’t allow heavy grease buildup on the oven interior.
Water heaterDrain a quart of water from your water heater tank every three months to remove sediment that slows down heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your heater.
Have regular service as recommended by the manufacturer.
