Sparks are flying over proposed legislation that would legalize some fireworks in the State of Arizona.
The Phoenix Fire Department put on a demonstration Thursday showing what they call the dangers of both professional and what is considered "consumer grade" fireworks in other states.
"There really isn't much of a difference," said Frank Salomon, a fire department spokesperson.
VIDEO: Salomon talks about the bill and the dangers of fireworksThe bill would allow the sale and purchase of fireworks like sparklers and fountains that shoot flames and sparks. It would not make fireworks that explode or launch into the air legal.
"The high temperatures of sparklers can be very dangerous to young children," said Salomon.
The Phoenix Fire Department is strongly opposing the legislation and hopes to keep all fireworks banned saying there stands to be an increase in injuries, property damage and wildland fires if the bill passes.
The bill is
House Bill 2258 and is sponsored by Representative Andy Biggs. Biggs was not available to comment Thursday on the concerns raised by fire officials.
