That means there’s no more procrastination it's time to get down to business and make sure you are really taking care of yourself.
Registered Dietitian,
Ashley Koff, says you don’t have to resort to medications to fend off the flu; you can fight it naturally with nutrition.
Here are her tips to keep you in good health.
Immune Support:Koff says digestive wellness is part of your frontline defense against the flu.
Koff recommends probiotics (good bacteria) and foods that support a hospitable environment for the good bacteria, such as inulin and soluble fiber found in vegetables.
Good choices according to Koff are Jerusalem artichokes also known as sunchokes, fruits, and grains like oatmeal.
If you are feeling a little under the weather, Koff also recommends a probiotic supplement instead of a dairy probiotic, she says the supplement won't encourage the mucus production the dairy food can.
Mushrooms:Koff says adding mushrooms such as shitakes to your meals boosts the immune system.
She says you should also consider taking a high-quality mixed mushroom supplement like Host Defense by New Chapter or Mycotaki by Metagenics.
Eat the Rainbow:Eat a rainbow of colors, we’re not talking about Skittles or Froot Loops, Koff says instead think real vegetables and fruits like tomato sauce, broccoli, sweet potatoes, blueberries and red onion to name a few.
Spice it up:Koff also suggests adding fresh herbs such as parsley and thyme to meals. Also use garlic, ginger, turmeric and other spices, too.
Watch It! :Alcohol and sugar are suppressants to the immune system, Koff says you may enjoy them in moderation, but then you should work to get the balance back in favor of optimal immune function.
Hydration: This time of year, Koff says hydration is a huge factor for staying well!
She says to keep in mind what hydrates and dehydrates you and remember you need to at least break even.
Koff says bodies prefer to be in a hydrated state for optimal functioning.
Sleep:When we are stressed (emotionally or physically), Koff says sleep helps the body recover, which is essential for weight management and immune health.
According to Koff, when we are tired, our body screams out for quick energy – and that means carbohydrates (quick, preferred energy).
Koff says that can be dangerous, because sugar isn't great for our immune system.
