Want an easy way to give your dog a cool treat this summer? Make them a “pupsicle.”

Just pour a can of chicken or beef broth into ice cube trays (reduced sodium is best) and freeze. Add bits of doggie treats for extra flavor.

That’s just one of the quick and low-cost tips the Arizona Animal Welfare League and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has for keeping your dog cool and safe as Valley temperatures rise again.

More advice from AAWL/SPCA:

  • At all times provide cool, clean water in a non-metal, spill-proof bowl
  • Never leave your pet in the car unattended
  • Exercise outdoors in the early morning or late evening and don't forget to bring plenty of water for you too!
  • Do the Palm Test before going out -- is the pavement too hot for the palm of your hand? Then it's too hot for your pet's paws!
  • Dogs get sunburns too, so be sure no skin is exposed to direct sunlight. Check with your veterinarian about using sunscreen on your dog
  • Use the hose to give your dog a bath, as well as some summer fun. Be sure to let the water run until cool before spraying you or your pet
  • Look for cool doggie gear like booties, cool vests, visors and reflective gear for night walks
