To help the animals find new homes, AHS is offering half price adoption on cats and kittens through June (which is National Adopt-a- Shelter Cat/Kitten Month).
The reduced adoption fee includes the spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations, a collar, ID tag, pet carrier and follow-up veterinary exam.
If adopting is not an option, foster volunteers are also needed.
In case cats/kittens fostering provides extra time for kittens to be weanned and/or gain weight before being spayed or neutered and put up for adoption.
Shelter officials said they took in more than 2,600 animals in May, averaging 100 a day.
Pets that are dropped off by their owners run the risk of being euthanized.
It's why the Humane Society wants to remind residents to use the shelter as a last resort if you must surrender your pet.
"What makes the situation even more critical is the lack of adopters for these pets and we desperately need to find homes for these cats and kittens." said Shannon Valenzuela, director of shelter operations for AHS.
