YUMA, AZ -- Halloween is right around the corner and while you’re getting costumes, decorations and treats ready, the Yuma Police Department is doing what it can to make sure you and your children are safe.

On October 31, the Yuma Police Department will host its first “Halloween Candy Screening,” where they will inspect candy before your children devour it.

Police Chief Jerry Geier says, “I encourage parents to revisit general Halloween safety rules with their children. I too am a parent and want all the kids to have a happy and safe Halloween.”

The candy screening will be held from 5pm - 9:30pm at the Yuma Police Department. It is free and open to everyone.

While officers and volunteers are checking candy, the police department says other police men and women will be patrolling the streets.

They want to remind parents who will be driving their children while they trick or treat:

-         Watch your speed. Most residential areas are 25 mph.

-         Have children exit the car on the curbside only.

-         Keep distractions, like cell phones and radios to a minimum.
