Every day moms face the same inevitable statement from their children. As soon as they get in the car after school or burst through the door they say, “Mom, I’m starving.”

Often the quick and easy snack packs you can buy for your kids are loaded with sugar.

Registered Dietitian Susie Bohanan – partnered with Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market – says nutrition doesn’t have to go by the wayside when it comes to snacks.

Children can still eat after school treats that are delicious, healthy and affordable.

Here are her tips and snack ideas for busy moms and kids.

PLAN AHEAD:

1. Portion control.
Snacks are just that. Snacks.

It’s easy for kids to over indulge in them so Bohanan recommends packing the right portion of snack for kids in a zip lock bag.

That way, they only eat the amount that’s right for them.

2. Remember, kids only eat what parents buy.

Try to keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum as they add no nutritional value.

These foods and drinks should be considered “special treats” on certain occasions.

Maybe allow kids to eat a “special treat” once a week.

3. As you know, it’s becoming more and more difficult to get kids to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, so make them more appealing by cutting fruits and veggies in smaller, more attractive shapes.

One of the great things about Fresh & Easy is it offers 98 cent produce packs which make eating healthy very affordable.
