PHOENIX -- Want to know the secrets magicians keep? Here's a trick for you called the 'Psychological Watch Effect,' from Valley magician Luke Brady.

All you need is perfect timing ... and someone wearing a watch.

There are no gimmicks or set ups involved although it can't be done with a digital or calculator watch.

Have the spectator (or spectators, can be done with many or even over the phone) hold out their arm with their watch and quickly cover their watch with the other hand without looking at it.

Say to them, "The typical person looks at their watch on average 6 to 8 times a day. We'll round off and say 7.

That is roughly 213 times a month and over 2,500 times a year. So you should know your watch pretty well, would you agree?

Without looking at your watch do you know if the individual hour marks on the face are Roman numerals, dash marks, or even jewels if it's a high end watch?"

Have them look and then cover their watch again.

"Now you should know if you have a second hand as well as if it sweeps around the face or stutters on each individual seconds."

Have them check and cover their watch again.

"Now you have just stared at your watch twice! Can you tell me the exact time?"

Notes:

I always say EXACT time so that the chances of them getting it wrong is higher. Even if it is that they are off by only a minute or two it will still works in your favor.

You can even do the same with a new state quarter. Ask them the year of the quarter, ask them the president on the quarter. Then the kicker is, now name the state of that quarter!
