They are perfect for the little ballerina, picture, weddings or just the little princess who loves to dress up!
Boutiques and online stores sell them for $50 and more. But Summer Goodrich with
Ribbons and Lace shows you how you can get make a homemade tutu for less than $20 (typically between $10 and $15) and you can have a fun accessory for your daughter!
Perfect for your daughter or a baby gift you can choose your color, length and style.
Here's how you get started:
HOW TO MAKE A TUTUSupply List
• Three bolts of 6” tulle (25 yards on each bolt)
• Non-roll elastic. ¾” or 1” wide
• Needle and thread OR sewing machine
Optional
• 3-5 yards of ribbon to add to tutu
• Flower(s)
Step 1: Measure the child’s waist and cut the elastic 2 inches less than the
measurement.
Step 2: Sew the elastic into a circle.
Step 3: Cut the tulle into strips. Average length for strips
is 27 inches.
Step 4: Tie the tulle in double knots around the elastic. Be sure
you keep all your knots close together. Do this all the way
around the elastic.
If you like your tutu with only tulle then you are now finished. If you want to add some extra embellishments, please continue as follows:
Step 5: Cut your ribbon into pieces that are the same length as the
tulle.
Step 6: Tie your ribbons onto the elastic the same way you tied the
tulle. Since you don’t have as much ribbon as you did tulle,
space the ribbon around the tutu evenly.
Step 7: Using hot glue attach the flower(s) to the tulle, not to the
elastic.
And that's it! It's that easy!
But if the thought of making it at home still has you a bit overwhelmed, you can head to Ruffler's Roost, The Ribbons & Lace Store.
The ribbons & lace store now only has 1,000’s of ribbons to choose from, but encourages customers to stick around and make certain projects right there in the store.
