How to cozy up to warm, frothy milk drinks at home

It's getting cold outside and sometimes we just need a quick way to warm up.

Or maybe you're having friends over and you'd like to make sure they feel warm and welcome in your home.

Terri Verason, Director of Nutrition Education for the Arizona Dairy Council, says there is no better way to warm up than with warm milk.

She shares these tips for creating a cozy milky drink:

- For best results, start with lowfat (1%) or fat-free (skim) milk - they actually steam and froth up better than higher fat milks; and they're lower in calories and fat, but loaded with nutrients. Very cold milk froths up the best. You can use a special frothing machine, a mini battery operated whip or whisk by hand. The final result should be smooth and thick, with small bubbles. (Overheating the milk will destroy the froth.)

- For a latte, mix the frothed milk with your favorite coffee or espresso. There are a variety of flavor syrups available to mix it up - look for the sugar free syrups to save calories. For a tasty twist, try steaming lowfat chocolate or other flavored milks - an easy way to make a gourmet hot chocolate! Sprinkle the top with cinnamon or cocoa powder for a professionally finished look or try your hand at coffee art.

- And remember, milk steamers and lattes are a deliciously easy way to build stronger bones and better bodies. One cup of milk (the average amount in a café latte or 8-ounce steamer) counts as one of your 3-A-Day of Dairy servings.
