The removable labels would rate a tire based on fuel efficiency/greenhouse gas rating, safety/wet traction rating, and durability/tread wear rating.
"It's the public's responsibility to know more about the products that they buy," said Cave Creek resident Vince Sferruzza.
Many drivers ABC15 News spoke with Thursday night seemed to agree.
"I think it's another example of the government wasting its time," said Phoenix resident Ted Zinman.
Government leaders say the proposed labeled will make it easier for drivers to make a decision when buying tires.
"Our proposal would let consumers look at a single label and compare a tire's overall performance as it relates to fuel economy, safety and durability," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
Drivers expressed their concern that the cost of producing the labels would be passed to the consumer.
"I think it's a waste of money, a waste of time and it's just going to come back to the general public as an additional expense when you buy tires," said Sferruzza.
The proposed label will be open to public comment before a final ruling is issued.
It is unknown at this point when the final decision is expected.
