PHOENIX -- Irene Trujillo was pleasantly surprised by the turnout for her party.

She only spent a couple of hours, and maybe $25, preparing.

But she came away with over $700 when the night was over.

"I was just so surprised at how much money you can make on jewelry that you don't wear," said Trujillo.

The guests at Irene's gold-buying party were just as thrilled with the night.

About 20 friends cleaned out their jewelry boxes and brought all of their old and broken stuff to the party to sell.

These parties are becoming more and more popular lately because the price for gold is at an all time high.

On the night of Irene's party, gold was selling for $1047 an ounce.

"Gold is so high, like even just a little bit, a couple of rings and a necklace is $200-$300," said Tim Hargis, co-owner of Valley Goldmine, the buyers at Irene's party. "Everybody gets more than they ever expect."

Sally Soto sold some knotted up herringbone necklaces and some unpaired earrings, and came away with $840.

"I'm going to buy myself a new electric stove that I need," said Soto.

Rachel Arroyo also made over $800 form her old jewelry, including one ring that got $180 all by itself.

"I bought it (the ring) about 15 years ago," said Arroyo. "You know what, I paid $80 for it."

The total payout for the evening was over $7000, Valley Goldmine paid Irene 10% of that take for hosting the party.

The amount they pay for each piece is determined by the percent of gold in the piece and its weight.

The buyers then melt down the gold and turn it into new pieces of jewelry that they will sell to stores.

Buyers will also buy silver and platinum pieces, and there are several buyers that will help you host a party.

Always get more than one quote, to assure you will get the most for your gold, and always check with the Better Business Bureau to research the company.
