Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia announced the death of the Phoenix officer on Monday afternoon.
In an emotional news conference, Garcia said the victim was a 21-year veteran of the police department.
A second police officer has come out of surgery and is in ICU at St. Joseph's Hospital in central Phoenix.
Sources say the two officers are part of a fugitive apprehension task force and had tracked a homicide suspect to 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road from a nearby neighborhood.
During that apprehension, a shooting apparently broke out, and the officers were shot. The suspect was killed at the scene.
The Phoenix Police Department has had 37 line-of-duty deaths since records started in 1925.
