HONOREE: David Campbell, NOMINATOR: Dean Pedrotti
I would like to nominate Gulf War Army Veteran David Campbell for recognition in ABC15 Salutes Arizona Veterans.
As a Fire Captain in charge of the Phoenix Fire Department's "Veterans Awareness Initiative," I have worked closely with David over the past three years in our efforts to train Phoenix firefighters to be better prepared when responding on a veteran in crisis.
The program is entitled "Frontline on the Homefront: Helping Veterans, Military Service Members" and is a joint effort between the Phoenix Fire Department, the Arizona National Guard and the Arizona Coalition for Military Families.
A central piece of the training involves a panel discussion where Wounded Warriors describe their combat experience, subsequent injuries, and the current challenges, difficulties, and daily struggles they face.
David Campbell, a triple Bronze Star recipient, has been a key speaker during these panel discussions, and has traveled with our outreach team as our efforts have grown and spread across the state. His story of sacrifice, coupled with his deep respect of first responders, always evokes strong emotions from them and has been a critical part to raise awareness of the issues facing Arizona veterans.
David's volunteer efforts have not stopped there.
He shared his powerful story during the Franciscan Renewal Center's "Embracing Those Who Serve Veterans Day" event in 2012, and in spite of continuing medical issues stemming from his Gulf War injuries, volunteers to help youth at a group home for teen boys in Tempe, called Mulligans Manor.
